Dent d'Hérens, Bionaz, Aosta Valley, 11021, Italija
The Dent d’Hérens, reaching an elevation of 4,174 meters, is a mountain in the Pennine Alps situated on the border between Italy and Switzerland. Lying just west of the iconic Matterhorn, it forms part of the alpine watershed dividing the Swiss canton of Valais and the Italian Aosta Valley. The mountain’s name originates from the nearby Val d’Hérens, although it actually does not overlook this valley, leading to some historical naming confusion with its neighbor, the Dent Blanche.
The Dent d’Hérens’ north side contributes to the Rhone river basin, while its south side feeds into the Po River. The Aosta hut, located at 2,781 meters, is commonly used for the standard ascent route. Despite its impressive stature and proximity to the famed Matterhorn, the Dent d’Hérens is less traversed, offering climbers a more secluded experience in the high Alps.
