Torre del Gran San Pietro

Torre del Gran San Pietro, Locana, Torino, Piedmont, Italija

Torre del Gran San Pietro, also known as Tour du Grand-Saint-Pierre, stands majestically in the Gran Paradiso massif, part of the Graian Alps. Reaching a height of 3,692 meters, this peak is nestled between Piedmont and the Aosta Valley in northern Italy, near the scenic Cogne Valley. Its prominence in the Alps is not just due to its height but also its challenging climbs and significant history. The mountain witnessed a noteworthy ascent in 1865 when Amé Gorret, Martino Baretti, and J. P. Carrel conquered a subsidiary summit. The main summit, however, was first scaled two years later in 1867 by an expedition led by Douglas Freshfield along with guides Daniel Ballay and Michel Payot, marking a significant moment in alpine climbing history.
