Weißkugel - Palla Bianca, Graun - Curon Venosta, Vinschgau - Val Venosta, South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, 39027, Italija
Weißkugel, also known as Palla Bianca, is a prominent peak in the Ötztal Alps, boasting an impressive elevation of 3,739 meters. It stands as the second highest mountain in the Ötztal Alps and ranks third in Austria. Straddling the border between Austria and Italy, Weißkugel is adorned with numerous glaciers, adding to its alpine majesty. The most accessible ascent is via the southern ridge, a route favored by mountaineers for its relative ease.
The mountain’s first documented ascent was by Joseph Anton Specht, accompanied by guides Leander and Nicodem Klotz in 1861. However, an earlier ascent in 1845 by Johann Gurschler and Josef Weitthalm, as indicated in Archduke John of Austria’s notes, challenges this claim. Regardless of who first reached its summit, Weißkugel has long been celebrated for its spectacular vistas, described by the second ascensionist, Douglas Freshfield, as some of the best views in the Tyrol. Today, it continues to draw climbers and nature enthusiasts, captivated by its stunning landscape and panoramic views.
