Grünhorn

The Grünhorn, or Gross Grünhorn, soaring to an altitude of 4,044 meters, is a prominent mountain in the Bernese Alps, Switzerland. It is uniquely positioned on the ridge dividing the Aletsch and Fiescher Glaciers, two of the largest in the Alps. The mountain is flanked by the Gross Wannenhorn to the south and the Gross Fiescherhorn to the north.

First ascended on August 7, 1865, by Edmund von Fellenberg and his team, the Grünhorn’s climbing history is rich with notable ascents, including the challenging north-east ridge route opened in 1913. The mountain is known for its diverse routes, each offering a unique blend of alpine challenges. The Grünhorn has also been the site of tragic events, including the death of renowned Swiss mountaineer Erhard Loretan in 2011. Its prominence in the Swiss Alps continues to draw climbers and mountaineers from around the world.
