Wildspitze

Wildspitze, Sölden, Bezirk Imst, 6458, Austrija

Wildspitze, with its towering elevation of 3,770 meters, is distinguished as the highest peak in the Ötztal Alps and North Tyrol, Austria. This majestic mountain, only second in height to the Großglockner in Austria, stands out in the European alpine landscape due to its remarkable prominence.

Nestled within the Weißkamm ridge that adjoins the primary Alpine chain at the Weißkugel, Wildspitze dominates the landscape with twin peaks: a rocky southern summit and a snow-capped northern summit. Surrounded by vast glaciers, including the extensive Taschachferner, the mountain is a prominent feature in the region.

The first known ascent of Wildspitze was achieved in 1848 by Leander Klotz and a fellow local farmer. Its 50° north face today attracts ice climbers for its challenging routes. The panoramic view from the summit is extraordinary, with visibility stretching as far as the Großglockner to the east and the Finsteraarhorn to the west.

Popular routes to the summit start from the Breslauer Hut, located in the village of Vent. Climbers often spend the night at the hut, continuing their ascent the following day. Another route originates from the Braunschweiger Hut, traversing across glaciers to reach the Mittelbergjoch and then to the peak. The average time for this latter route is approximately 6.5 hours. Wildspitze, with its imposing stature and stunning natural beauty, remains a key destination for mountaineers and nature enthusiasts.
