Piz Bernina

Piz Bernina, Pontresina, Maloja, Grisons, 7504, Švicarska

Piz Bernina, standing at 4,048.6 meters, is the highest mountain in the Eastern Alps and a dominant feature of the Bernina Range in the Rhaetian Alps. Located in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, near the famed resort of St. Moritz in the Engadin valley, it is unique as the most easterly Alpine mountain exceeding 4,000 meters. This majestic peak, named after the nearby Bernina Pass, is renowned for its geological composition, predominantly diorites and gabbros, as well as granites found in its massif.

The mountain, first ascended in 1850 by Johann Coaz, is encircled by significant glaciers like the Morteratsch Glacier. As the highest point of Switzerland’s Danube drainage basin, it holds considerable hydrological significance. Piz Bernina’s isolated position, along with its status as the culminating point of a group of summits under 4,000 meters, accentuates its prominence in the Alpine region.
